Being a disciple of Jesus requires both knowledge and obedience. Jesus’ mother, Mary, summarized it well in her short but deeply profound command to the servants at the wedding in Cana in John 2:5- “Do whatever he tells you.” (ESV) In order to follow Jesus we need to first know what He says. This is the first element of discipleship that Adelphia’s classes are founded upon. Knowing God’s Word is imperative! Jesus said as much himself in His response to Satan during His temptation when in Matthew 4:4 He quoted from Deuteronomy 8:3- “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (ESV) Our classes are designed to help our students know and understand Scripture more fully. That’s why we spend the majority of our time learning from teachers about what God’s Word says in both the Old and New Testaments. If the Bible is our guidebook for life, we better know what it says.

The second foundational piece to being a disciple of Jesus is the ability to take God’s Word and put it into practice. Or, to put it simply, obedience. Merely acquiring knowledge about God and the Scriptures does not make anyone a disciple. In order to be a disciple, one must obey Jesus by putting his words into practice. According to Jesus himself, this is what separates the fool from the disciple (Matthew 7:24-27). Our classes do not just focus on building up an academic knowledge of God, but they rather elicit a call to respond. This is why learning at Adelphia is primarily practical in nature instead of academic. You probably won’t write any long term papers in class, but you will graduate fully equipped to serve God’s purposes in our world as you learn to apply his commands to your life.
